The Junior Girls swimming team was undefeated at the Wing Swimming Championships. The girls won all 6 of their races accumulating 36 points. This was a major factor in the combined Squadron Teams coming 2nd overall. Cdt Greenhalgh-Brown later won a Corps Blue for representing the ATC at Swimming.

Dec 29th saw the passing away of a second young member of the Squadron when Michael Standish (23) succumbed to illness associated with his brain tumour. In July Michael had collected his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award at Buckingham Place to complete a hat trick of family awards following in the footsteps of elder brothers Phillip and David.

On New Years Eve Mr Derek Bailey (67), a member of the civilian committee also passed away

2002
The Squadron entered a team in the RAF WARMA 2 Day Road March at RAF Cosford. Believed to be the first time that the squadron had entered a team in this event, everyone completed in fine style although one member 'christened' the Bosses car on the way home as she was taken sick. The cadets raised £1200 for the Squadron Charities, Leicester Royal Infirmary Oncology Unit and Macmillan Cancer Relief.

The WARMA March Team included
Kate Cooley, Claire Osborne, Vicky Gamble, 'Griff' Griffin, Si Craik, Matt Hancock, Jez Metcalfe, Nic Harrison, Jon Minney, Alex Cooley,   Sqn Ldr   Standish (past CO)

The band played at the Family Fun Day held at Wistow to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. The first task was to put up the gazebo, which without any instructions proved a formidable task. The band will recall playing their last display during a torrential downpour. Professionalism shone through and they stoically played on to the end of the display.

The band played for the RBL County Standard Bearers Banner Rededication Parade in Market Harborough.

Sqn Ldr Standish (as he was then, a past CO of the squadron) returned to pound the roads of Nijmegen as he completed his 5th 100 mile 4 day march. Although he 'retired' from marching in 2000, he returned one more time to raise money for the Leicester Royal Infirmary Oncology Unit in memory of Michael. He commented "it was the most difficult of the marches I have done. There was a great incentive to raise money for the hospital but I knew I was there only because Michael had died. The support I received from well wishers and the rest of the team helped a lot". He eventually raised £3000.

2003
Belgium
was as ever  - Belgium. A mixture of fun, frivolity and fantastic memories of the Menin Gate

The band was invited to play at 1F Squadron Families Day at RAF Cottesmore. This was the first social event of 1F since their return from operations in Iraq.
The band played at the celebration of the unveiling of a Meteor aircraft on a roundabout outside Lutterworth to commemorate Sir Frank Whittle.

Equipment valued at more than £7900 was handed over to the Leicester Royal Infirmary Oncology Unit. The money had been raised by   Sqn Ldr   Standish, Christine Standish and the Squadron in memory of Michael who had died from cancer in December 2001. The Squadron raised £2700,   Sqn Ldr Standish £3100 through the Nijmegen 100 mile march, Christine and John £1100 through a raffle and donations in lieu of flowers were more than £1100.

Sgt Emily Green sits in one of the specialist chairs purchased with the money.

Disappointed at not hearing the band play at RIAT Air Commodore Chitty arranged a visit to the Squadron to hear the band. He was favourably impressed not only with the band but the wide variety of activities the squadron took part in as well as the band events.

The pinnacle of musical achievement came when the band won the Corps National Marching Band
Championships at RAF Halton,
winning a close fought event by one point.
Drum Major Simon Craik collects the covetted award from Air Commodore Chitty.

Oh and we also did Duke of Edinburgh Awards at Bronze and Silver levels, two adventure training camps at Johns Lee Wood, sports and barbeques at the squadron, took part in all Wing Sports events, did two Remembrance parades, Battle of Britain Parade and ATC Sunday parade, coffee mornings for the RBL and a host of other things that were 'just normal ATC activities'

2004

In February we didn't hold an ATC Sunday Parade in Harborough, instead we travelled to Corby to help them commemorate the last ever parade by Sqn Ldr George Brady. Deputy Wing Commander of South & East Midlands Wing, past CO of Corby and a friend of 1084 with his many trips to Belgium and other events.

On 20th February the CO and Flt Lt Standish were invited to the ATC National Concert Band performance at RAFC Cranwell. Included in the band were Cdts MacDonald (bass trombone) and Hollis (clarinet). The first cadets from the Squadron to take part in this prestiguous event.

Cadets presented cheques for £500 to Macmillan Cancer Relief and £1100 to Leicester Royal Infirmary Oncology Unit. This included a donation from   Sgt Jo Purnell who raised £400 from a charity ball organised as part of her Gold DofE award.

The squadron was the first youth group to be affiliated to a RBL Branch in Leicestershire when the squadron was affiliated to the Market Harborough Branch.

Sgt Griffin and Sgt Emily Green visited 1F Squadron at RAF Cottesmore as a result of the bands engagement there last year. They were given a guided tour of the HQ and hangar and got a close look inside the Harrier.

Our 8th visit to Belgium included a trip to Arras where a wreath was laid at the Flying Memorial to all those airmen who were killed and have no known grave.

The band played at the Lutterworth celebrations to commemorate Sir Frank Whittle, inventor of the jet engine.

Band won the percussion section and full band and were runners up in the fanfare section at Wing Field day. This was the 3rd consecutive time the band has won the full band section.

The band was once again back at RIAT. This year they met Javine and played for HRH Prince Feisel of Jordan. The band was commended by Group Captain Dawn McCafferty, Inspectorate of Recruiting who wrote to Air Commodore Chitty '… I must make particular mention of 1084 Squadron Band from Market Harborough. The band played magnificently and professionally throughout the three days and drew significant crowds to the marquee …'

In what must have been the highlight of the cadets ATC activities, as reward for winning the Corps Band Championship last year, the band was invited to play at Euro Disney. They spent two days there and thrilled the large crowds with their musical display before the main parade. On the way back to England we took the chance to visit the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing on the Somme

The cadets helped out at the opening of the new Torch Trust for the Blind Headquarters near to the Headquarters.

And the usual ATC events we do each year like Duke of Edinburgh Award, parades for Remembrance Day etc, sports and barbeques, Halloween party, Christmas party, adventure training camps, wing sports events

2005

The Squadron raised £300 in two nights for the Tsunami Appeal. One of the events was an auction to be CO and other staff for the night. Cdt Connor Monk was assisted by Sgt Jo Purnell and Sgt Nic Harrison

Another successful and enjoyable staff, NCO, and Civ Comm dinner was held. An ideal time to socialise and talk to everyone.

The band performed at the Make a Wish Foundation event at Oakham. Chance to meet up with some other Space people.

Wing Field Day saw the band sweep the board winning fanfare, percussion and full band. The Boss chipped in by winning the staff photo competition. (meaning she took the photo not that she was in it)

This year saw many VE-J Day celebrations and the band was busy at several parades.

The highlight of the celebrations was the event organised by the Squadron with the RBL. Based on a 1940's street party theme the Boss organised party games from the era. Then the Silver Fox led over 100 guests in a rousing sing song of WW2 tunes (by playing the music not singing - have you heard him sing?) This was followed by a disco run on traditional squadron lines.

During the evening cheques for £900 each were presented to Macmillan Nurses and Leicester Royal Infirmary Oncology Unit, the two squadron charities.

RIAT, and the band entertained the Duke of Gloucester and Prince Feisal Bin Hussein of Jordan. Our Regional Commandant Group Captain Ford was at the event and took time out to talk to each member of the band, congratulating them on another sterling performance.

The band once again showed the true professionalism when they continued to entertain the crowds at Lutterworth Carnival despite he heavy rain.

Regional Band Championships proved to be 'one of those days' and the band came away empty handed, well almost, Drum Major Nic Harrison was judged 'best in class'. First time a drum major from the squadron has won an award.

A visit to the Police Helicopter was enjoyed by all. One of the cadets though had trouble finding his house on the map display.

The band was part of yet another first. This time a combined ATC, Army Cadet and Sea Cadet band which displayed at Rockingham Raceway.

The T Flight camp at Johns Lee Wood, Halloween and Remembrance parades rounded off another successful year, followed by the Squadron Dining in Night. Not forgetting the routine things like sports and social events, Duke of Edinburgh Award and the other activities too numerous to mention here.
